The ending in this game was close.  Jeff (US) went into the last turn with a few point advantage, and dominated Europe, Africa, and South America.  Jay (USSR) had locked up the Middle East.  Asia and Central America were split.  While Asia would see some action in the last two turns, Central America was such a draw that neither player contributed many resources.

But by the end of the last turn, Jay had seized domination of Africa from Jeff and had also disrupted enough battleground countries in Europe to turn that region into a draw.  Jay would score two of his regions (Middle East and Africa) twice, thanks to Jeff holding three scoring cards on the end turn.  This would be enough for Jay to win by three.  It was an incredibly close game.
